CELEBRATION OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT - March 2006

Guest of Honour: Mr Barry Murphy

Mr Murphy came to Dominican College in 1968 as a young Physics teacher. The school had been a girls’ school until then but boys were admitted in 1968 and so the school appointed its first male teacher. The school had less than 300 pupils and many fewer buildings than it does now. As well as teaching inside the classroom Mr Murphy helped with football and other extra-curricular activities. He became the first lay vice-principal of the College in 1977.  In 1989 the Trustees decided that Dominican College should appoint its first Principal who was not a Dominican Sister and Mr Murphy was appointed to that role which he held with distinction until his retirement in 2001.

Dominican College is proud to count Mr Murphy as a past principal and it was a special day for Dominicans when he presented the following Achievement awards:

MacAulay, O’Neill & Martin Cup - For outstanding achievement at GCSE level

Charley McKerr

Rafferty & Boyle Cup - For outstanding achievement at AS Level
