A report on the Lower Sixth Geography field trip to Magilligan by Una Donnelly and Harriett Wilson.
On a cold, frosty morning on the 30th November, the AS geography students set off on a wild adventure to Magilligan, not knowing what to expect. With Mr. Doone driving and Mr. Crutchley acting as sat-nav we were bound to arrive sooner or later. We eventually arrived at the field centre and we were greeted by Natalie and David (who looked scarily like Ralph Harris…) and given a talk about what happens at the centre and then shown to our rooms. After settling into our rooms we headed down to another room for a talk about our field work for that day. After our long awaited lunch we were ready to head out. We got kitted out in all our waterproofs and headed out into the unknown! So there we were, on the beach, and that’s when the work started. We walked from Benone beach to the not so near-by forest, as we travelled we studied plant life and took several different readings. Along the way we saw some very funny sights including Mr. Doone tripping over Mr. Crutchley and Laura Owens slipping in the mud! After several hours of walking it was time to head back to the centre. We put our gear away and headed for dinner, the angel delight defied gravity and the steak slice was something to behold! So overall we were pretty full up at the end. After dinner we wrote up our results and the rest of the evening was ours to do what we wanted. The fun times were started with a heated game of ping-pong between Una and Mr. Crutchley…no surprise who won there, teachers: 0 pupils: 1. Mr. Doone had left us to fend for ourselves and Miss. Hassan arrived with a DVD for us to watch. After the DVD it was time for bed. Next morning after breakfast we set off for Derry, here we preformed surveys on the public to research shopping habits. This only took a few hours and when this was done we returned to the field centre, said our good-byes and headed home. Overall the experience was a memorable one and next year’s Lower Sixth are in for a treat!
