Dominican College U16 Team win Coleraine and District League 21 December 2009

The Dominican U16 Team have just finished a very successful league season. They reached the final of the League thanks to some excellent performances during the season.

They played four matches in the league campaign beating North Coast, Dunluce and Garvagh and drawing with St Joseph’s. The game against St Joseph’s was the highlight of the league with a final score line of four all. The Dominican boys went into a two nil lead early on in the game but with five minutes gone in the second half they found themselves four two down. The team then showed a tremendous amount of character and they fought back to get a very respectable draw. This meant that they would again face the same team in the final.
The final was played at The Joey Dunlop Centre in Ballymoney and it was an excellent venue with the pitch being in excellent condition. Once again the match proved to be a very close but also very sporting encounter. St. Joseph’s took the lead ten minutes into the first half and despite some good attacking moves the Dominican team could not find a way to break down the very resolute St Joseph’s defence. The game remained at one nil until mid way through the second half when a free kick was awarded to the Portstewart team. The free was very cleverly worked by Cory Moore and Mark Donnelly and the latter player slotted the ball into the corner of the St Joseph’s net.
The score remained at one all even after extra time so the schools decided to take five penalties each. Again the result was a draw at four all and at this stage the Managers decided to share the Trophy. The two teams contributed to a hard but fair contest and they were a credit to their schools and the Coleraine and District League.
