Dominican Pupils set off this weekend for Aix en Provence .Mrs Elaine Smith ,organiser of the French exchange ,expressed her hope that the pupils would immerse themselves in the culture of their French host family developing their confidence in using the language .She explained that this was the fourteenth French exchange but that it was the first with the College Chateau Double in Aix . Pupils from the French school are due to visit Portstewart in March 2009.
Rosaleen Adamson and Souad Binouche will accompany Mrs Smith on the trip with 26 Dominican French pupils from Year 11 to Year 14 . The group will leave school on Sunday 29th September at 5.20 AM and will return to Portstewart on Saturday 4th October at 3.30 PM.

Lazar defeated last year’s champion, Jordan Smyth in a very close match. At one point, Jordan’s attack almost made checkmate but Lazar fought back in a final that could have seen the title awarded to either player. Along with the honour of being champion, Lazar won an Easter Egg.

| Fourteen pupils from seven different schools in the local area joined together recently for their first meeting of this year’s Seven Schools Project. The Seven Schools Project is a Departmentally funded initiative which evolved out of Education for Mutual Understanding and is targeted at giving Year 11 students the opportunity to explore environmental and cultural issues by means of seven joint trips throughout the school year . The schools involved in the programme include Dominican College Portstewart, Coleraine Inst ,The Girls’ High, St. Joseph’s College, Coleraine College, North Coast Integrated and Loreto College. |

Kirsty Tinkler, a Year 10 pupil, followed her recent success in winning the Silver Medal for the high jump in the North Eastern Finals by claiming the Bronze Medal at the recent Ulster Championships. Kirsty now proudly holds the School Record at 1.43 metres. |

| Forty fourth form Dominican Geography students recently spent two days exploring the Curleyburn River near Magilligan as part of their GCSE course. The students , accompanied by Mr Doone and Mrs Sturgeon, tested factors such as water quality, velocity, slope and depth at various points of the river from its source to its mouth . The students were assisted in their investigations by the Field Officers from the Magilligan centre. |

The classes, held in the W5 complex in The Odyssey aimed to “inspire the next generation of Scientists “ and , on their inaugural visit to Northern Ireland , the visiting RI Scientists enabled students to both see and try out experiments normally deemed too dangerous for classroom demonstration. The Royal Institution Master classes are formulated to engage, encourage and inspire students in the excitement and reality of research. |

| Yasmin Geddis, a Year 10 Pupil at Dominican College, has recently won her third United Shotokan Karate Federation (USKF) championship title. Her success in the 2007 finals held for clubs from all over Ireland and Scotland, held in Blanchardstown, saw Yasmin won her third successive title in the over 5 foot 5 category where she competed with much older contestants .Although she is still only 14, Yasmin won through her three bouts within the all girls senior category to be crowned overall champion in this year’s competition. |

This was the first year that the school decided to design its own Christmas card. | A talented pupil from Dominican College, Portstewart, has scooped runner up prize in a national poetry competition. Charlene McDaid, a pupil in Year Nine at the college wrote a poem based around the theme of Restorative Justice, and was the proud recipient of a cheque for £100. As part of the prize, she also won £100 for the school. |
