SPONSORED WALK 2004
As the wave’s crash dramatically against
the unforgiving rocks and majestic shorelines of Portstewart
Strand, the wind dancing with the sand, this beautiful scene was
changed suddenly by the sight of 450 sinister figures trudging
along the beach walk.
Was it a terrifying scene from Matthew
Arnold’s Dover Beach of “ignorant armies clashing by night”? No,
it was of course, Dominican College’s annual walk for charity,
held on Friday 24th September.
Now in its 7th year, in the past
we have donated to worthy causes such as the Northern Ireland
Children’s Hospice and the Romanian Challenge Appeal,
highlighting the importance we place on both local and
international projects. Recent world events such as the Sudan
and Beslan crises have raised our awareness of the crucial role
that The Red Cross plays in supplying aid to
those in need, and so we saw it as a worthy cause to support.
The admirable work Mencap carry out in assisting the families of
disabled children, as well as the Children’s Cancer Charity’s
efforts made them our other candidates.
The walk was a great day out for both
students and teachers collectively, the weather allowing us a
beautiful, if typically windy, day.
And it was all worth it in the end as once
again we beat our record by raising £8,500. Who would have
thought that having fun could be so productive?
