BISHOPS ATHLETICS SERIES 2007
The Bishops Athletic Series for Year Eight
pupils in Secondary Schools was held at Coleraine Academical
Inst. on Friday 15 June. This is the tenth year of this
competition which is sponsored by Bishops Footwear Ltd. The
popularity of this event was shown by the number of teams taking
part- nine teams -representing most of the schools in the
Coleraine Area. Over one hundred boys and girls competed in what
was a very enjoyable and keenly contested event.
Schools enter a team of two athletes per
event and each athlete can enter two events plus the relay.
Points are awarded in each discipline and these together with
the relay placings go towards a final team score. Thanks to the
generous sponsorship of Bishops Footwear Ltd the first three
athletes in each event get a medal and the two winning teams get
a trophy. Mr T Hamilton, who has taken a personal interest in
this competition, was on hand to get the events under way.
There were quite a few outstanding
performances - A. Richardson of CAI was a convincing winner of
the 100m, went on to win the shot putt and anchored his team to
victory in the relay. J. Brownlow, also from the host school,
had a great performance in the high jump and picked up valuable
points for his team in the long jump.
Limavady Grammar ensured that CAI did not
have things all their own way. K. Hung and J. Elliott recorded
very fine performances in the 800m and the long jump
respectively. R. McCool was narrowly beaten into second place in
the sprint and his team chased CAI all the way to the finish in
the relay. However, CAI came out on top at the end of the day,
with a very fine score of 45 points.

In the girls’ competition one of the outstanding performances
came from S. Browne of Limavady High School who won the 800m in
a very competitive race. Dalriada ensured a high points total by
winning the 100m – H. Clarke- and gaining first and second in
the long jump – G. Cochrane and H. Clarke. Their overall team
victory was assured when they also won the relay.
At the end of a very enjoyable and competitive afternoon,
Dalriada emerged victorious in the girls team competition with
Coleraine High and Loreto College taking second and third
places. In the boys competition CAI won and Limavady Grammar and
Dominican took the minor places.
Once again a special vote of thanks must go
to Bishops Footwear Ltd. for their generous sponsorship and to
CAI for the use of their facilities.
