Karate / Judo

Yasmin Geddis, a Year 9 Pupil at Dominican College Portstewart, has just become Irish Karate Champion at a competition in Dublin. She won the Irish Shotokan Cup for Under 15 girls, a remarkable achievement considering she is still only 13, and has 2 more years in this group.

In Dublin, Yasmin defeated 4 opponents on her way to the final. There she met a Dublin competitor, who was strongly fancied to win having already become the Liverpool Champion recently. Yasmin however defeated her so convincingly that the bout had to be stopped.

The discipline that Yasmin fights in is Kumite, which involves a 3 minute bout where competitors score by striking their opponents with either their hands or feet.

Karate is very important in the Geddis household, and Yasmin is coached by her father, who runs the Coleraine club where Yasmin is a member. Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club are to be congratulated for their success, as, out of 17 members who competed in Dublin, no less than 11 came home with trophies.
