NEBSSA ATHLETICS 2007

A group of Dominican College students have achieved notable athletic success in the past few weeks at the North Eastern Board and Ulster Championships.

The North Eastern Board Area Heats were held at Coleraine A.I. on Friday 4th May and eight Dominican athletes qualified for the finals. Joe Magowan, and Maeve Mc Williams from Year Eleven qualified in the 800m events with Colum Harris winning through in the 1500m. Kirsty Tinkler from Year 10 qualified in the High Jump with a new school record of 1.40m. In the second year events Aubin Rutaganda reached the finals in the shot as did Amber Doole from year eight. Also from year eight Daniel Burns won through in the sprint and long jump as did Luke Osborne in the 800m.

At the finals schools from Coleraine to Ballyclare were competing and the standard of competition was very high. None the less the Dominican pupils came home with three medals. Daniel Burns was in great form winning the long jump with a new school record of 4.49M.and also coming second in the 100m. The very consistent Kirsty Tinkler again got the silver medal in the High Jump. All the Dominican team achieved personal bests on the day and came home very satisfied with their efforts.

Two athletes then went on to achieve even more success in the Ulster Championships on Saturday 19th May. Daniel Burns showed his all round ability by winning the Shot Putt with a great throw of 9.54 Metres and he has now got two school records. The ever reliable Kirsty Tinkler also added to her collection of Ulster Medals by winning the Bronze in High Jump with a personal best of 1.43M.

The Dominican athletes continue to train for their school sports day on Friday 8th June and the Bishops Athletics Finals on Friday 15 June. No doubt there will be more success for this talented group of athletes.
